Texas Cities Home to Highest Increase in U.S. Construction Jobs

Construction and extraction ranked in the top five sectors with the most job growth, with a 9.25 percent increase from 2012 to 2015, according to an analysis by Abodo of employment opportunities in the top-five fastest growing industries in the 25 most populous U.S. cities.

Growth in the construction and extraction sector occurred in a few key cities, primarily in Texas, which is home to five of the 10 fastest-growing U.S. cities. Many of these areas are suburbs of Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. The Abodo report notes that as populations expand, so does housing and city infrastructure.

Denver is another city experiencing growth in the construction and extraction sector. The city is undergoing a residential housing construction boom, as well as an increase in energy projects tied to the extraction and transportation of crude oil and natural gas, according to the analysis.

The analysis measured the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) location quotient, which compares an occupation’s prevalence in a specific location to its national prevalence, based on total employment instead of total population, according to Abodo.

Following are the top cities for construction and extraction job growth, as measured by the BLS’ location quotient.
